Birth injury cases are among the most sensitive and consequential, often involving preventable complications during labor and delivery that can result in lifelong medical needs.
For families, the stakes are extraordinarily high—emotionally, physically, and financially. Our role is not only to pursue accountability, but also to help secure the resources, care, and support systems children need to maintain quality of life and thrive.
One of those children is Remi.
Several years ago, our partner Mark Kamitomo represented Remi, who was born with cerebral palsy caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain during birth, and her family. Remi’s parents first approached Mark for help in finding answers following a traumatic birth experience. Through the legal process and reviews by prominent medical experts, were able to confirm that Remi’s injury should not have happened. It was preventable with proper fetal monitoring.
From the outset, Remi was a fighter—and an engaged, active child. Her parents, equally determined, made a commitment: Her injury would not define her life or limit what she could achieve.
“It was one of the cases where I became very attached,” Mark said. “Remi is such a sweet little girl, and her parents are very good people. They had no animus toward the medical providers. They just wanted to know what happened and why, and get some sort of resolution for Remi so she would have care and resources when they were no longer able to care for her.”
Her parents’ dedication has made all the difference. With the right support, Remi has continued to grow, explore her interests, and develop her talents—most notably as a musician.
Last month, her journey reached a national audience when her story was featured by AT&T during the Masters Tournament. The spot highlighted not only the challenges she has overcome, but also her creativity and joy.
For us at Luvera Law Firm, Remi’s success underscores what birth injury advocacy is ultimately about. While no legal outcome can undo what happened, it can open many doors: to therapy, adaptive technologies, education, and experiences that allow children like Remi to thrive.
Mark is proud to have supported Remi and her family on their journey, and we celebrate all that she has accomplished. Her performance on such a prominent stage is a testament to her hard work, talent and spirit—and a powerful reminder of what’s possible with the right support.
Congratulations, Remi, on an incredible performance and a future that continues to shine.
