For example, in serving as lead trial counsel for the State of Washington in its lawsuit against the tobacco companies, we assisted in achieving a landmark settlement that not only allowed Washington taxpayers to recover millions of dollars spent for medical care of people harmed by tobacco, but also to provide our citizens with better healthcare in the future.

We also represented the families of two boys killed in an oil pipeline blast in Bellingham, Washington.  After a long-fought battle, we secured a $75 million settlement against Olympic Pipeline Company, the largest wrongful death and personal injury settlement in Washington State history. This settlement not only helped compensate the families for their tragic losses, but also sent an emphatic message to all pipeline companies that safety must be their number one priority. The settlement enabled the families to lobby political leaders for more stringent safety regulations.

Our firm made significant changes in the fight to prevent domestic violence in Pierce County through our representation of the family of Crystal Brame, who was killed by her Chief of Police husband in a murder-suicide.  As a part of the settlement, the County agreed to create a Family Justice Center in Crystal’s honor, a place where victims of domestic violence and their children to find food, safe shelter and assistance.  The case also prompted landmark federal legislation and funding of the “Crystal Judson Brame Domestic Violence Protocol Program.”

Our case against a California medical device company not only resulted in $40 million record verdict to compensate our client and his family for the terrible injuries caused by the company, but also prompted the company to issue an international recall of its dangerous device so that this tragedy would never happen again.
